Introduction

In the southwest corner of Harbour City is the Lesser Gate. Unlike the Main Gate, it is closed most of the time. Opening only to allow people through, most likely on their way to and from the nearby beaches and the cliffs overlooking them.

The Lesser Gate of Harbour City, often overlooked in favor of the more bustling Main Gate, holds its own charm and significance. Here’s a deeper look into its features, uses, and the stories it might tell:

Description and Architecture

The Lesser Gate, smaller and less grandiose than the Main Gate, is built into the imposing stone walls that surround Harbour City. It features heavy, weathered wooden doors bound with iron, showing signs of exposure to the salty sea air. The gate is usually closed, secured by massive iron bolts and locks, reflecting its infrequent use.

Above the gate, there’s a small watchtower, where a few guards keep an eye on the comings and goings, mainly to monitor who leaves or enters during the times the gate is opened. The architecture here is functional, with arrow slits and a pitched roof to protect against the harsh weather blowing in from the sea.

Function and Usage

The Lesser Gate is primarily used by locals. It serves as a direct route to the beaches and the scenic cliffs nearby, areas popular for their breathtaking views and recreational opportunities. The gate opens at specific times, typically early in the morning and late in the afternoon to accommodate those heading out for day trips or returning from a relaxing day by the sea.
