Introduction
Bracketing the Docks to warn and guide sailors safely in, are a pair of lighthouses known as The East Watch and the West Beacon.
East Watch
Appearance and Construction
East Watch stands at the eastern tip of the docks, built from sturdy white stone with a striking black iron lantern room at the top. It’s taller and older than West Beacon, visible from miles away. The lighthouse is cylindrical with a spiraling staircase inside that leads to the lantern room, which houses a massive Fresnel lens.
History and Function
East Watch was originally built to guide fishing fleets safely back to harbor. It’s manned by a lineage of dedicated keepers, known as the Wardens of the Watch, who have passed down their duties from generation to generation. The lighthouse also serves as a weather station, providing crucial meteorological data to the port.
Local Lore
There's a local legend that the original keeper of East Watch was granted the gift of foresight by a sea spirit, enabling him to predict storms and guide ships safely even in the worst conditions. It’s said that his descendants still carry a trace of this gift.
West Beacon
Appearance and Construction
Located at the western extremity of the docks, West Beacon is constructed from red brick with a more modern, metallic dome for the light. It’s shorter than East Watch and features a more robust and technologically advanced light system, capable of projecting different colors, which are used to communicate weather warnings and other alerts.
History and Function
West Beacon was built more recently, in response to the increased traffic from larger merchant vessels and to aid nighttime navigation. It plays a crucial role in managing ship traffic, ensuring that vessels enter and leave the harbor safely and efficiently.
Local Lore
West Beacon is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of its first keeper, who tragically died in a storm while trying to keep the light burning. It’s said that on stormy nights, his ghost can be seen, ensuring the light never fails, guiding sailors safely just as he did in life.
Cultural and Strategic Importance
Both lighthouses are not just functional but are symbols of safety and guidance for the sailors and citizens of Harbour City. They are celebrated in local festivals, particularly during the Festival of Lights, where both lighthouses feature prominently in the celebrations. Stories, songs, and poems about the lighthouses and their keepers are common, reinforcing their importance in local culture.
