Introduction
The mounds were constructed by a long-forgotten civilization known as the Ancients, a race of beings who possessed advanced knowledge in magic and astronomy. These Ancients were deeply attuned to the natural world and the cosmic forces, and they built various structures across the land that aligned with celestial events.
The mounds each have a cave mouth facing a small lake between them. In the center of the lake is a ruined tower.
Purpose of the Mounds
Celestial Observatory
- Astronomical Alignment: Each cave is positioned to face in such a way that during the equinoxes, the rising or setting sun reflects directly off the lake through both caves, illuminating an ancient symbol carved into the back wall of each cave. The mystic significance of which is probably lost in the ruins of the tower.
- This event is now used to mark time and seasons, which are critical for agricultural and ceremonial purposes.
- Significance: The alignment with celestial events suggests that the Ancients used these caves not only for practical purposes like timekeeping but also for ritualistic and religious events, perhaps to honor deities associated with the sun and moon.
Gateway to the Underworld
- Mythical Entrance: The caves are believed to be a physical representation of the gateway between the living world and the underworld. This belief stems from ancient myths that describe the caves as mouths that speak to the world of the dead.
- The truth is that the gateway used to be in the top of the now ruined tower.
- Ritual Use: The Ancients used these caves for funerary rites, where the spirits of the deceased were believed to pass through the gateway to the underworld. Ritual objects and remnants of ceremonial use might still be found within the caves, or the tower.
Magical Conduit
- Ley Lines: The tower, lake, and mounds are situated at the convergence of several ley lines, channels of powerful magical energy that crisscross the earth. The Ancients, aware of these lines, built the mounds to harness, amplify, and manipulate this energy.
- Magical Research and Defense: These locations served as centers for magical research and as a defensive measure to protect the Whisper Wood and surrounding areas from magical and physical threats.
Role in the RPG
- Quest Hub: The mounds and their caves can serve as pivotal locations for quests, offering mysteries to uncover, ancient artifacts to retrieve, and celestial events to observe. They can act as portals for adventures that span different realms or times.
- Cultural Significance: Different groups or factions within the game might hold varying beliefs about the mounds, leading to conflicts or alliances based on their historical and spiritual significance.
- Encounters and Exploration: The caves could be home to guardians left by the Ancients, spectral beings, or creatures that have taken residence over the millennia. Exploring these caves might require solving puzzles that unlock the ancient magic or secrets within.
