The West Road

Back to Harbour City

Introduction

The West Road is a storied route that stretches westward from Harbour City, traversing a diverse and often perilous landscape. This ancient road has been the lifeline for travel and adventure for countless generations, and it holds many secrets and dangers along its length.

Path of the West Road

Direction and Route: The West Road begins at the Lesser Gate of Harbour City, heading more-or-less due west. It maintains this general direction, although it does wind and meander to navigate natural obstacles and terrain features. The road passes south of the Whisper Wood and The Mounds, and it skirts north of The Dragon’s Teeth mountains. This route ensures travelers can avoid the densest parts of the forests and the most treacherous mountain passes.
Terrain and Features: As the road progresses westward, it crosses rolling hills and open plains, offering expansive views of the surrounding countryside. It then enters more rugged terrain as it approaches the Dragon's Teeth, where the road becomes narrower, steeper, and more winding. The road is well-maintained near Harbour City but becomes rougher and less traveled the further it stretches.
The Climber's Rest: One notable stop along the West Road is The Climber’s Rest, an outfitters and inn situated at the base of the first mountain of the Dragon's Teeth range. This establishment is a critical stop for adventurers seeking to navigate the challenging terrains ahead, offering supplies, information, and a place to rest before embarking on more perilous journeys.
Disuse for Trade and Commerce: The West Road has fallen into disuse as a major trade and commerce route due to the preference for the Main Road, which passes through the Whisper Wood to the northwest of Harbour City. The Main Road offers a more direct and safer path for caravans and merchants, leading to the West Road being less traveled and maintained.
Bandit Activity: The West Road is known for its bandit activity, particularly in the areas where it passes through more isolated regions. Bandit gangs often set up ambushes in the dense forests near the Whisper Wood or the narrow passes near the Dragon's Teeth. Travelers are advised to move in groups or hire guards when traversing these sections of the road.
Monsters and Threats: In addition to bandits, various monsters inhabit the regions surrounding the West Road. The Whisper Wood is home to mysterious and sometimes malevolent spirits that can confuse or mislead travelers. The Mounds are rumored to be haunted by the restless spirits of the Ancients, and strange magical creatures are said to roam the area. Near the Dragon's Teeth, more formidable beasts such as wyverns, stone giants, and even the occasional roaming troll pose significant threats.
Adventure and Exploration: Despite its fall from commercial use, the West Road remains a path of adventure and exploration. Many adventurers take this route to seek out ancient ruins, hidden treasures, and the thrill of the unknown. The less traveled nature of the road adds to its allure for those looking for challenges and discoveries.
Ending Destination: The West Road ultimately leads to the western territories and beyond, connecting to other roads and some long-forgotten trade routes. Its final destination depends on the traveler’s intentions, whether it be reaching distant cities, exploring uncharted lands, or finding ancient ruins lost to time.

The West Road is a place of both opportunity and peril, where adventurers can find fame and fortune or meet untimely ends. It embodies the spirit of adventure that defines the world west of Harbour City, offering endless possibilities for those brave enough to traverse it.
